The project represents a significant long-term investment in the future of boating, fishing, recreation, and tourism on Lake Vermilion. Once completed, the upgraded facility is expected to improve traffic flow, increase usability, enhance safety, modernize infrastructure, and create a better overall experience for residents, visitors, anglers, guides, and outdoor enthusiasts who access the lake through Moccasin Point each year.

The improvements are part of a broader wave of recreation investments happening across the Lake Vermilion area, including new public access improvements, accessibility enhancements, and outdoor recreation projects designed to help more people safely and easily experience northern Minnesota’s lakes and public lands.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Parks and Trails Division, construction activity will increase beginning June 1, 2026.

Important Dates & Information

Through May 31:

  • The site remains open to the public for launching and retrieving watercraft.
  • Parking will be very limited throughout May.
  • Tree clearing and topsoil removal will continue in designated areas.
  • Restricted areas are marked and cordoned off.
  • Any personal property must be removed from the site by May 31 or it will be removed.

Beginning June 1

  • Moccasin Point Public Water Access will close to public access from both land and water.
  • Commercial traffic may use the site at the contractor’s discretion.
  • St. Louis County will post roadway signage stating: “Moccasin Point Public Water Access Closed June 1 – Nov”

Blasting & Rock Removal Activity

Beginning June 1, drilling and blasting operations will take place as part of the rock removal process needed for the reconstruction project.

  • Blasting is expected to continue for approximately 2–3 weeks.
  • There may be 1–2 blasts (“shots”) per day.
  • Typical blasting times are expected mid-morning and mid-afternoon.
  • Blasting is anticipated to be completed by July 9.
  • A blast horn will sound five minutes before each blast.
  • Safety perimeters, including portions of the lake surface, will be secured during blasting activity.

Visitors on the lake should expect construction noise and visible activity in the area throughout the project.

According to the DNR, contractors are being closely monitored for compliance with permitting, erosion control, and stormwater management requirements.

The updated Moccasin Point Public Water Access is currently anticipated to reopen in Fall 2026.
